18 Nov What is my beauty routine now that I am a mother?
As an avid fan of Asian beauty products for a long long time, I found it great to see the rising attention in the West to the “Korean 10-step skin care routine” in recent years. For a long while, I had been there, following multiple steps with so many products, without fail, everyday of the week, every week of the year. Nevertheless, now as a mother, I find time incredibly scarce! My skin care routine now is so much simpler most days (yes, the full 10 steps do require a lot of effort) with the products that are easy to apply and travel with.
In this blog I will share with you the two routines, the quick main one – I call it the Momma Routine for when I hardly have time (which is 99% of the time now) and the slightly longer one – I call it the Luxurious Routine (when I feel like pampering myself, which happens rarely, and mostly in the evening because who has time in the morning now?!)
THE MOMMA ROUTINE
Yes here is my minimal effort daily 3-step beauty routine!
Step 1: Cleanser
I love love love Su:m37 Miracle Rose Cleansing Sticks (who doesn’t love a cleansing stick with rose petals?) so much that I bought 5 in one go every single time. It’s not because of me being mad, but mainly because I had been through one occasion when it was sold out everywhere and I became scared that I would never get to put my hand on the rose stick again! I am on my last stick now and I believe it is reported to be sold out everywhere, again!? The other issue is that I can only buy them in Korea or rely on friends who do make their trips there.
So that’s why I was estatic when I discovered the Neogen Green Tea Cleansing Stick, it smells just as great, if not better (I love green tea!) and it is everything I love about a cleansing stick, without the dangerous scarcity because my favourite department store, Selfridges, actually stocks it!
Step 2: Moisturiser
I was introduced to the Environ Step Up System by my dermatologist 4 months ago, she understood how busy it is to be a mother, and basically told me to be realistic. Her advice was that all I need is a good product with vitamin A. Environ does it beautifully. Its Skin Essential bottle is packed up with vitamins and amazing nutrients for your skin. It has a step-up system as a way to gradually introduce your skin to increased levels of vitamin A. I am currently on the second bottle of Level 1 and a package is already in transit with the next-step products. Not only are these products showing great results, they also happen to be friendlier to my wallet compared to La Prairie or La Mer.
Note: Sometimes, if you have extra 30 seconds to spare, you can use the Neogen H2 Dermadeca Serum Spray (mentioned in the Luxurious Routine below) before applying the moisturiser!
Step 3: Sunscreen
It is extremely important to apply sunscreen when you use products with Vitamin A so I am religious about it! Kiehls Ultra Light Daily Defence is great, not only does it protect you well from the damaging effects of sun exposure, it is also super light on the skin. You can put makeup on top without any greasy feeling at all.
THE EVENING/ LUXURIOUS ROUTINE
Step 1: Oil/ Balm Cleanser – to remove oil based impurities such as SPF & make up
I must have been double-cleansing for as long as I can remember. Shu Uemura Balancing Cleansing Oil was my go-to for a long time but I hate that it dripped out of my hand every time and was such a pain to travel with (somehow all of your beauty products get soaked in the oil by the time you arrive at the destination!). I found out about Banila & Co Clean It Zero 5 years ago and never look back! It comes in solid form, emulsifies with water and rinses away super cleanly! On the odd days when I used more makeup, it still would still dissolve the makeup effortlessly without any dripping! The Holy Grail of Cleansers to me.
Step 2: Foam Cleanser
You need a second cleansing step to remove water-based impurities like sweat and dirt. These cannot simply be removed by your oil-based cleanser.
Neogen Green Tea Cleansing Stick is my go to now!
Step 3: Exfoliator
Again, I like products that are practical to use. To be honest, exfoliating had, previously, never been my thing since all of the products I tried before were too messy. Neogen changed the game completely when they introduced their Bio-Peel Gentle Gauze Peeling pot. It comes in pads soaked with great products that provide gentle exfoliating and so easy to use!
Now you can buy this product in the UK, at Selfridges!
Step 4: Toner
Step 5: Essence
I was loyal to SKII Essence for a long time but it is quite expensive compared to Missha Time Revolution First Treatment Essence. I feel I can splash my face with the magic water without worrying about the financial damage all the time (I do use them up very quickly!).
Step 6: Serum
Another “again”… I love products that are practical and carry no fuss, and Neogen H2 Dermadeca Serum Spray does the job wonderfully! A serum in the form of a spray bottle, it can’t get easier that that!
Step 7: Eye cream
Step 8: Moisturiser
Environ! I love the effect it has on my sleepless skin (Tigo slept through the night since 10 weeks old, so it actually wasn’t his fault! The lack of sleep actually came from revamping my blog! Can you believe?). The bottle has a pump for dispensing, and I adore that. Pump bottles tend to be more hygienic than jars since you’re not touching the product itself every time you use it (which may lead to contamination).
THE LAST SECRET?
You can actually combine all steps 4-8 in one products! Neogen Re:p Nutrinature all-in-one multitem toner, essence and moisturiser does the multi-tasking for you! Multi-tasking is the skill you must have if you are a mother.
Some days, this bottle is all I need!
